The recent national media coverage focused on the price of diesel and the trucking industry has grabbed the attention of many elected officials on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers are certainly hearing from OOIDA, but they also need to hear from you, the constituents they are supposed to represent and the people whose votes they need to stay in office. Please call the offices of your Senators and your Representative in Congress today. Please convey to them or their staff how fuel prices are impacting you, your livelihood and your family.
Congressional offices are hearing many complaints about the price of diesel and gas these days, so they will be particularly interested to hear suggested solutions.
As an active member of the trucking community, you can speak with authority about how trucking industry practices and procedures may be corrected or improved to help you and your fellow truckers survive fuel price hikes. Specifically, you can talk about fuel surcharges and how it is common practice in the industry for brokers or motor carriers to skim or pocket portions of fuel surcharges that should have gone to the trucker that paid for the fuel. You should let your lawmakers know that legislation is needed to correct this problem. If the trucking community can't influence the price of fuel, which makes up the lion's share of its expenses, then it should be assured that surcharges paid by shippers and receivers are getting to the person that pays for the fuel.
