Olive Update
Posted On 09/29/2009 20:25:53 by NightWind

First I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone that prayed for Olive and left comments on my last blog. It meant more to us than you could ever know, we really needed the encouraging words that everyone shared. It’s been a week now and Olive is improving daily. She’s eating much better but not enough, especially with this special diet food she’s eating. It just doesn’t have all the right type or enough calories for her to recover the weight she’s lost. She was 127 lbs but now she’s at 105. It’ll take time to gain it back. The vet says Olive has to eat it because it’s the best thing for her liver right now. I told the vet that I agreed, but it would be a wasted effort if she starves because the food doesn’t have what she needs. Another way to put it is “the operation was a success but the patient died” LOL.

So we’ll wait and see how she’s doing next week when she goes back for her check up. While I have the utmost respect for the vets, I also know that they are only human and are making educated guesses as to what’s best for her. She’s back to begging for cookies and wanting to go for a ride so those are all great signs that she’s recovering. Last night we played tug-of-war for the first time since she got sick. Normally I don’t let her win because she is a want to be alpha female so it’s not a good thing for her to beat me but I let her win just because I was glad to play with her again. I’ve had a dog for as far back as I can remember and each time I’ve gave one to God it broke my heart, I think it’s different this time because Olive has been such a sweet girl even after the crappy things that have happened in her life before she was rescued by Great Dane Rescue. I’m so thankful that her other Mom Pam, found her in time. Pam’s a saint in my book and has a heart of gold. There’s no doubt that she’s going to heaven. She’s rescued over 150 Great Danes. Olive was 65 lbs when Pam saved her. We couldn’t have asked for a better dog, Olive’s been pretty much perfect except for the non stop barking when we first got her. She’s still scared of thunderstorms and thinks she owns the whole road but other than that she’s been a champ. She gets along with our cats. She doesn’t tolerate other dogs or strangers but those are minor things as far as we’re concerned. Anyway I’m rambling so I better shut up. Thanks again for all the kind words and prayers. God bless you all.

Happy trails NW

I am so glad to meet someone who finds rescue dogs as wonderful an asset as I do.  I adopted Samantha from Mastiff rescue.  Like Olive she had a really rough start.  When they found her she weighed only 68 pounds, but eventually made it back to a healthy 170.  She was such a great dog and wonderful friend for the time that I was blessed with her in my life.  I still donate to rescue organizations for the wonderful work that they do.  My present love is much smaller, but was in a similar situation when she came to live with me.  Her name is Little Bit, and the love of my life.  Her pics are on Mikes profile.  Again all my prayers continue to be with Olive.  Glad she's starting to get back to her old self, and hope she continues to get better.  Kim
