Ever had a blow out? Dodged blown tires on the interstate/ Or even worse tried to dodge one that decided to blow in passing. Gets the blood flowing doesn't it!
Tires, unfortunately aren't something that most drivers think about as much until they hear that "BANG" and see pieces flying through the air. There's no fast way to repair or mount a tire. The best way to avoid sitting hours on the side of the road or in a tire shop waiting for a tire to be repaired is to check the air pressure with a good reliable tire gauge least once a week. Yes, after some years of experience we can thump them and tell from the sound that we have a low tire. but nothing beats putting an air gauge to work.
We all hate the aggravation and time involved in checking the air pressure because the inside valve is never in an easily accessible position simply because it's an inside tire.
I know it didn't take me long to learn to be picky about how my tires were mounted. I want the valve to be pretty close to each other when they are mounted just having enough offset for me to reach each valve. Just like every driver out there I've tried being a contortionist or it felt like one a few times so I could check and if needed add air to the inside tire.

Tires can increase or decrease your fuel mileage. Under inflated tires cause more more drag or rolling resistance between the tire and the road. Not to mention it's going the heat up and eventually blow out putting an additional load on the tire next to it setting you up for blow out number two. Resistance takes more power to roll the tire, and more power means more fuel has to be used to over come the rolling resistance. Over inflation causes tires to wear unevenly and prematurely. Over inflation can also cause poor handling too which is something that we don't need added to our already hectic jobs of driving for ourselves and everyone else out there on the road.
For more information on tire care including re-tread or recaps you should go to the Tire retread & Repair site and read all the information that they have there. With the ever increasing cost of fuel and oil related products like tires, it pays you back tenfold when you take the time to keep your tires at the proper air pressure  at all times. Not to mention the life you save might be your own.
